2nd BCAM Workshop on Nonlinear Dynamics in Biological Systems
September 1-2, 2016
BCAM-Basque Center for Applied Mathematics
Mazarredo 14, Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain
In mathematical terms, a nonlinear system is that in which the output is not directly (linearly) proportional to the input. Such systems can be described using simple equations, but still exhibit complex and often chaotic behavior characterized by sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Many biological systems, such as a beating heart or a folding protein, are inherently nonlinear and their study requires interdisciplinary approaches combining theory, experiments and simulations.
Such studies can benefit greatly from the collaboration of researchers with different but complementary backgrounds, including disciplines such as molecular dynamics, physical chemistry, bio-informatics, biophysics... In this international meeting researchers from different disciplines will present their most recent results and discuss the future direction of their studies.
The meeting will consist of sessions focusing on different topics: Heart Dynamics, Complex Chemical Systems, Cell Dynamics and Communication, Cell Motility and Active Particles, Complex Networks. Each session will include mathematical modelling as well as experimental or applied research.
The workshop will also include a poster session where students can present their current work.
