Title: Using Artificial Intelligence and automation to combat climate change through synthetic biology
Speaker: Dr. Hector Garcia Martin (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA)
Abstract:
July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth at the time, and the world hit twelve straight months of record-high temperatures afterwards. The culprit is our reliance on fossil materials to create fuels and materials. Synthetic biology can help combat climate change by enabling a circular economy that diverts our society from an overreliance on petrochemicals. However, our inability to predict the outcome after a cell is modified makes synthetic biology a long and costly process that depends on arduously obtained expert biological knowledge. We will show how we can combine machine learning and automation to make synthetic biology predictable, and help unlock its full potential to nourish the bioeconomy with renewable products.
