Exceedance over threshold method for wind speed
We are interested in estimating the extreme wind speed Vref, which is a basic parameter for wind turbine classes and therefore strongly related to design of wind turbines. It is defined as the extreme10-min average wind speed with a recurrence period of 50 years. This type of questions arises in the theory of extreme value distributions. The method of exceedance over threshold considers only the observations that exceed a high threshold and approximates its distribution function. The aim of this talk is to present a survey of this methodology and to illustrate it using real data. This is part from a pro ject between the research center CENER (Centro de Energ´ıas Renovables) and the Universidad Pública de Navarra, in collaboration with Professors Fermín Mallor (Departamento de Estadística, Universidad Pública de Navarra) and Edward Omey (Mathematics Department, H. University of Brussels).
