Coding the Finite Element Method (FEM) with Geophysical Applications

Fecha: Mar, Mayo 17 - Vie, Mayo 20 2016

Hora: 09:30

Ponentes: Ángel Rodríguez Rozas, UPV/EHU & BCAM

Dates: 17-20 May 2016 (4 sessions)
Time: May 17 and 18: 9.30 - 12.30 pm (6 hours) / May 19 and 20: 9.30 to 11.30 am (4 hours)

This course provides a practical introduction to efficient design and implementation of the Finite Element Method applied to geophysical problems. Through a series of lectures and guided hands-on sessions, attendees are expected to understand fundamentals of writing efficient Finite Element codes in Sequential and Parallel Computing Environments.
The content is aimed at researchers and practicing engineers with basic experience of programming in C/C++ and/or Fortran. The material that is presented is independent of any particular problem and software package, although engineering applications are particularly emphasized.

PROGRAMME
- Definition of a model problem in Geophysics
- Finite Element fundamentals, variational formulation, functional spaces

- Implementation discussion: definition of a common framework

- Finite dimensional spaces, mesh deployment, boundary conditions, isoparametric formulations

- Parallel design and implementation with MPI

- Problems with multiple right-hand-sides

- P-refinement strategies
