Information of interest

BCAM Researcher at the Computational and Applied Statistics group.
Data Science Coordinator at the Knowledge Transfer Unit (KTU).

Short bio:

Fernando obtained his MSc in Telecommunication Engineering in 2007 [first-class honours] and his PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2015 [cum laude], both from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). He has had post-doctoral research experience at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research (Switzerland), the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M), and the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) in Bilbao.

Research interests:

His core expertise is developing AI-ML solutions for biomedical and health scenarios. These range from supervised classification for prognosis to unsupervised clustering for patient profiling and DL-based computer vision for medical image understanding. Currently, he researches topics such as ordinal classification and ML-based competing risk analysis for time-to-event modelling.

    Current projects:

    • SPHERES - Semi-parametric models for human growth, extremes and recurrent events in survival analysis.

    Recent projects:

    • BMTF - Basque Modelling Task Force, Mathematical modelling applied to health:
    1. WP10 - Deep learning applied to the management of hospital patients: improvement of health management, quality and clinical safety.
    2. WP9 - Mathematical modelling of human exposure to pollution: assessment of the impact on respiratory health in the Basque Country.
    • S3M1P4R - New proposals for estimation, prediction and validation of semi-parametric models for the analysis of complex data with applications in health and climate change.
    • MATH4SPORTS - Mathematical modelling for the sports industry: health and performance.
