Excesses over threshold method for wind speed
We are interested in estimating the extreme wind speed Vref, which is a basic parameter for wind turbine classes and therefore strongly related to design of wind turbines. It is defined as the extreme10-min average wind speed with a recurrence period of 50 years. This type of questions arises in the theory of extreme value distributions. The method of exceedance over threshold considers only the observations that exceed a high threshold and approximates its distribution function. The aim of this talk is to present a survey of this methodology and to illustrate it using real data. This is part from a project between the research center CENER (Centro de Energías Renovables) and the Universidad Pública de Navarra, in collaboration with Professors Fermín Mallor (Departamento de Estadística, Universidad Pública de Navarra) and Edward Omey (Mathematics Department, H. University of Brussels).
