BCAM adheres to DORA and CoARA international initiatives to promote responsible research

BCAM  continues its commitment to promoting responsible research by joining two key international initiatives: DORA (The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment) and CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment).

DORA, a declaration promoting fair and responsible research assessment, focuses on discouraging the misuse of impact metrics such as journal impact factor as the primary measure for assessing the quality of research and researchers. Instead, it promotes evaluation practices that assess the quality and relevance of scientific content, as well as the social impact and ethics of research. 25,159 individuals and organizations in 165 countries have signed DORA to date.

On the other hand, CoARA is an initiative promoted by the European Commission, Science Europe and the European University Association, with a collaborative and shared learning approach to advance new assessment policies. As of 2 July 2024, 760 organisations have signed the agreement.

For years there has been a global debate on the need to reform current research assessment models in favour of more holistic, flexible models adapted to different disciplinary and institutional contexts. By joining these two initiatives, BCAM reaffirms its commitment to the principles of responsible scientific evaluation and publication. This includes, not only producing high quality research, but also ensuring that this research is evaluated and communicated in a way that promotes transparency, accessibility and ethics in scientific research.

José Antonio Lozano, BCAM's Scientific Director, in response to this endorsement, stresses "the importance of these principles for the scientific community and we endorse BCAM's continued commitment to excellence and integrity in mathematical and applied research. We look forward to exchanging practices and experiences with other organisations in the coalition to enable mutual learning and improve research evaluation practices."
