Gianni Pagnini, invited speaker at the Workshop on Mathematics & Wild Fires in Coimbra

  • The event will be of the utmost importance in Portugal, a country that has been devastated by terrible wild fires in the last few years

Gianni Pagnini, Ikerbasque Research Associate and BCAM’s research line leader on Statistical Physics, will be one of the invited speakers at the Workshop on Mathematics & Wild Fires. The event will take place on 8-9 November 2018, at Centro International de Matemática in Coimbra.

Portugal, specially the center of the country where the city of Coimbra is localised, has been devastated by terrible wild fires in the last few years. This tragedy has affected the Portuguese society in a way that is now extremely engaged in avoiding future similar and dramatic events.

Mathematics can play a significant role in predicting fire behaviour and spread, as well as, in defining suitable strategies to prevent and combat fires, so this Workshop, which is also  a satellite event of the VIII International Conference on Forest Fire Research will be an event of the utmost importance in the country.

During his talk, Pagnini will speak about his research on Fire-spotting modelling for regional-scale wildfire simulators.
