Institutions from ten autonomous communities will celebrate "March, the month of mathematics" in 2021

  • This Friday, 13 November , the previous programme will begin with the online conference "Winning, winning, winning and winning again" given by Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón

"March, the month of mathematics" is a project for the dissemination of mathematics that will mainly take place during the third month of 2021. It has been designed by the DiMa network for the dissemination of mathematics and financed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). Among the programmed activities there will be an exhibition, a school photography competition (which will be launched this coming 16th November), virtual escape rooms, origami and informative conferences, among others. All of them will focus on mathematics and its applications and, in particular, will focus on the theme "mathematics for a better world", chosen by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) for 14 March, International Mathematical Day. Although the bulk of the activities will take place during March 2021, some of them will be held earlier. Such is the case of the online conference to be given by Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón entitled "Win, win, win and win again" on Friday 13 November at 6.30 pm, as part of the Congrés Català d'Educació Matemàtica (C2EM). "March, the month of mathematics" extends the celebration of International Mathematics Day to an entire month, with a programme with multiple activities that will take place in ten communities (Andalusia, Aragon, the Canary Islands, Castile-Leon, Catalonia, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, the Basque Country and Valencia), with the possibility of extending them to others during the development of the project. "The aim of this network format is to share the experiences of each territory by devising common activities, and thus to be able to generate a network that will favour the development of the dissemination of mathematics in an orderly and collaborative manner", explains Edith Padrón, researcher at the University of La Laguna and director of the project. In addition, informative materials will be generated (printable, downloadable or digital) with corresponding educational sheets, which will be available on the project's website. All these contents will be designed from the perspective of inclusion of science, taking into account the gender perspective, social exclusion issues, high skills or disabilities. International Mathematics Day On 26 November 2019, at its 40th General Conference, UNESCO proclaimed 14 March as International Mathematical Day on the proposal of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). Each year will be dedicated to a special theme, seeking to awaken creativity and show the connections between mathematics and all kinds of fields, concepts and ideas. Following this thematic axis, numerous events will take place all over the world. This year the theme is "Mathematics for a better world". About DiMa The DiMa Mathematical Dissemination Network was established in May 2018, with the support and collaboration of the entire Spanish mathematical community. This project led by DiMa is financed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and co-financed by the Strategic Mathematics Network (REM), the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME), the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SEMA), the Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM), the Society for Statistics and Operational Research (SEIO), and the Spanish Federation of Mathematics Teachers (FEPM). The DiMa network encompasses a large number of people working to disseminate mathematics in Spain (http://dima.icmat.es/inicio/miembros-dima/).
