Luis Vega has been elected Officer of the International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics - ICIAM

• In his new position, Professor Vega (BCAM-UPV/HEU) will be in charge of the external relations of ICIAM and will participate in the organization of the congress ICIAM 2023 in Tokyo

Professor Luis Vega (BCAM-UPV/EHU), leader of the linear and non-linear wave research line of the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics and coordinator of the center's Severo Ochoa accreditation, was elected Officer of the International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics - ICIAM last Saturday, July 20^th, in Valencia.

ICIAM’s bylaws indicate that the council must be led by 6 people: the elected president and the outgoing president, the secretary, the treasurer and two members. Their term of office is four years, renewable once. Luis Vega and Wil Schilders, current president of EU-MATHS-IN, were selected with more than 50% of the votes among the 4 candidacies presented. The board meeting was attended by representatives of the more than 50 applied mathematics societies from around the world that are part of ICIAM. As an Officer, Vega will be in charge of collaborating in the organizational and external relations activities of ICIAM, especially to ensure the good organization of the next International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, which will take place in Tokyo in 2023. This is the first time that a Spanish researcher has held the Officer position at ICIAM.

About Prof. Vega

Luis Vega has been a full professor of mathematics at the University of the Basque Country since 1995 and has been a visiting professor at several international universities. He is also a member of the European Academy of Sciences, an elected member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences (RAC) and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He is a member of SeMA, the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics, and has been vice-president of the organizing committee of ICIAM 2019, as well. In his extensive career, Vega has been awarded for his research work on several occasions: in 2012 he received the Euskadi Research Prize and in 2015 the Blaise Pascal Medal in Mathematics. In addition, since 2014 he has led the HADE (Harmonic Analysis and Differential Equations: new challenges) project in BCAM and the UPV/EHU, financed by the European Research Council with one of the most important grants in the scientific field, an ERC.
