Luz Roncal participates in a round table on the challenges of the scientific career and the situation of women researchers

• The event will take place in Madrid on 11 February, coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and in addition to the BCAM researcher, 5 other women scientists will participate

Luz Roncal, researcher at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics - BCAM, will analyse, together with five other scientists, the great challenges of the Spanish R&D&I system and the situation of women in the scientific system in an open debate organised by the Spanish Association of Scientific Communication and the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences. The event entitled "Conversations in the Academy: Dialogues in plural feminine" will take place on February 11th at 19:00 in the Royal Academy of Sciences in Madrid.

Attracting and retaining talent, job stability and professional mobility will be some of the topics raised at the meeting, which will also address issues directly related to the situation of women researchers, coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The debate, moderated by the president of the Spanish Association of Scientific Communication, Elena Lázaro, will also include the participation of academics Ana Crespo de las Casas, professor of Botany at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid and president of the Biology and Geology section of the RAC; Inmaculada Ortiz Uribe, professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cantabria; Belén Alonso Martínez, professor of IPO research at the Institute of Marine Sciences of the C.S.I.C. of Barcelona; Pilar Bayer Isant, Professor Emeritus of Algebra at the University of Barcelona, and María Llorens Martín from the "Severo Ochoa" Molecular Biology Centre.

About Dr. Roncal

Luz Roncal received her PhD in Mathematics from the University of La Rioja in 2009. Since 2016 she has been a researcher at BCAM – Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, where she is part of the Analysis of Partial Differential Equations group. Specifically, she works in the Harmonic Analysis research line. Since the beginning of 2019 she has been an Ikerbasque Research Fellow and has just been awarded a Ramón y Cajal contract. Before joining BCAM, she was an Interim University Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Computing at the University of La Rioja.

In 2017 she was awarded one of the BBVA Foundation’s Leonardo Scholarships to support researchers and cultural creators with a highly innovative scientific, technological or cultural production. In October 2019 she won the Young Female Scientific Talent Award in the mathematics category, a recognition granted by the Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain Foundation (FRACE) and Mastercard to young Spanish scientists who have stood out for their professional career.
