BCAM researchers participate in different initiatives for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
- 11 February is the day recognised by the UN to promote the access of girls and women to STEM careers
The United Nations declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to promote and improve the access and participation of women and girls in science. This year, the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics - BCAM, is once again taking part in different initiatives carried out with the participation of researchers from the centre.
Within the framework of Emakumeak Zientzian, BCAM is participating in 3 of the activities to make the work of female researchers in the mathematical environment more visible. The first of these will take place on 15 February in the Maryam Mirzakhani seminar room at BCAM. This is a film forum where the film Figuras Ocultas (Hidden Figures) will be shown and a debate will be held on the film with the researchers Cristina Galán and Daniela Moreno.
The second one, Scientists of yesterday and today, will be held on 17 February at the Bidebarrieta library. Six women scientists working in research centres in Bizkaia will talk about the research they are involved in and pay tribute to some of the great women scientists in history by telling the story of their fascinating lives and scientific contributions. Among the six participants is Lore Zumeta, who in addition to presenting her research, will talk about Florence Nightingale.
Finally, on the social networks of the Emaukeak Zientzian project, we will be able to see videos of Jone Renteria and Ainhize Barrainkua giving a brief presentation of the work they are carrying out in the research.
On the other hand, as in previous years, BCAM is participating in the 11F initiative. This year the researchers giving talks at the schools are Ainhize Barrainkua and Margarida Moragues, who will present their work and their personal experience in the world of research.
Finally, Jone Rentería will come to her old schools to talk about her experience as a researcher both in the USA and here.
