New Bridges between Mathematics and Data Science conference held in Valladolid comes to its end
Different personalities from the world of mathematics, machine learning and data science met between 8 and 11 November
New Bridges between Mathematics and Data Science conference has come to an end after 4 days of exchange of ideas and advances in the construction of new bridges between the participants and attendees of the event.
"The event has been a great success, described as historic by Professor Jesús López Fidalgo, Director of the Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence of the University of Navarra and President of the Society of Statistics and Operations Research", explains Luis Vega, Coordinator of REM, "both for the quality of the plenary talks and for the breadth of the ideas put forward in the round tables, and the scientific level of the mini-symposia". To this he would like to add the success of participation and in particular the interest aroused by the meeting among young researchers. "As Professor Alfio Quarteroni, Professor of Numerical Analysis at Politecnico di Milan, said, these are times of profound change and very exciting for mathematics (see video)", adds Vega. To conclude, he comments that they are very glad to end this congress, as all the participants showed their interest in giving continuity to what is already called the Valladolid Meeting.
The conference, inaugurated by Antonio Largo, Rector of the University of Valladolid; Raquel Yotti, Secretary of Research of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and Pilar Garcés, Vice-counsellor of University and Research of Junta de Castilla y León, and organised by Red Estratégica de Matemáticas (REM) and the Instituto de Investigación en Matemáticas de la UVa (IMUVa), brought together experts in the fields of mathematics, machine learning and data science, who were able to share the advances they are making in their research.
Among these experts, and as plenary speakers at the conference, were Joan Bruna (Courant Institute), Coralia Cartis(University of Oxford), Alfio Quarteroni (Politecnico di Milano), Marco Cuturi (Google Brain) and Jeff Goldsmith (University of Columbia).
In addition, the round tables were attended by political leaders, including Enrique Playán (Director of the State Research Agency) and Jesús Marco (Vice-President for Research and Science and Technology of the CSIC), as well as representatives of different mathematical societies: the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME), the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SEMA), the Society of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO) and the Catalan Society of Mathematics (SCM).
To complete the programme, 30 mini-symposia were held on the different topics of the congress and BCAM participated through researchers from the centre such as Jose Antonio Lozano (Scientific Director), Santiago Mazuelas, Luz Roncal, Pedro Caro, Paula Gordaliza, Hristo Inouzhe and Aritz Perez. In addition, it is worth mentioning Luis Vega (BCAM-UPV/EHU), REM coordinator, who has been Chair of the congress and member of the Scientific Committee, and also speaker at the round table Challenges and opportunities for Mathematics in Data Science: the point of view of funding agencies and policy-makers.

About REM
REM, constituted by Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath), Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), Instituto de Matemáticas Universidad de Sevilla (IMUS), Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT), la Red de Institutos Universitarios de Investigación en Matemáticas (redIUM), la Red Española Matemática-Industria (math-in) y la Conferencia de Decanos de Matemáticas (CDM); is the Strategic Mathematics Network, which aims to foster the international presence of Spanish research in mathematics, the creation of synergies among the mathematical scientific community and to increase the socio-economic impact of Spanish mathematical research. It promotes the dissemination and transfer of mathematical technology, orienting research towards the needs of companies, industries and public administrations. The period 2018-2020 has been managed by IMUS, in 2020-2021 it is being managed by BCAM. REM is funded by the Networks programme of the State Research Agency.
