Santiago Mazuelas wins one of the BBVA Foundation's Leonardo Scholarships

The BBVA Foundation has just announced the resolution of the 2018 call for Leonardo Scholarships for Researchers and Cultural Creators. The Ramón y Cajal Fellow at BCAM and Ikerbasque Santiago Mazuelas has been one of the winners of these grants in the field of Information and Communication Technologies for the project "Data processing for decision making and open machine learning".

 

The Leonardo Grants are intended to support personal projects of researchers and cultural creators in intermediate stages of their career, between 30 and 45 years of age, with a highly innovative scientific, technological or cultural production. More than 1,500 people have participated in this year's call, with a total of 64 scholarships awarded in 11 areas covering fields that go from basic sciences to literary creation.

 

Santiago Mazuelas received his PhD in Mathematics and PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Valladolid (Spain) in 2009 and 2011, respectively. Since 2017 he has been a researcher at BCAM - Basque Center for Applied Mathematics where he’s part of the Data Science group. Specifically, he works at the Machine Learning research line. Before joining BCAM, he was a Staff Engineer at Qualcomm Corporate Research and Development, and he also worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Associate in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
