Workshop around New Bridges between Mathematics and Data Science
The event will feature five plenary sessions by leading scientists on the international scene, and a large number of thematic minisymposia
The Spanish Mathematical Strategic Network (Red Estratégica de Matemáticas – REM , in which BCAM participates) will organise a one-week workshop from 8 to 12 November 2021 in Valladolid, Spain. The aim of the congress is to bring together researchers in mathematics, machine learning and data science to exchange ideas and progress in the construction of new bridges among these fields and make visible the work already done.
The workshop will be structured around five plenary sessions by leading scientists on the international scene, plus a large number of minisympisia about six main topics; high dimensional statistics, optimization, approximation, numerical analysis, statistical analysis of complex data and industrial applications. The registration form is already open, the early registration fee is 50 euro until September 30th 2021 and the late registration fee is 90 euro from October 1st 2021 and will include lunches and coffee breaks.
For some of the young participants (master and PhD students, postdocs) there are grants covering accommodation and the candidates will be selected under the supervision of the School’s Scientific Committee. The grant application date will be September 1st 2021 and the notification of acceptance on contributions and grants on September 10th 2021.
Understanding the world through data and computation has always been at the heart of scientific discovery. Over the last decade, data-driven approaches have been very successful, among them neural networks. The reason for the success raises many questions about the robustness, explainability, interpretability and fairness of the algorithms used. Answering these questions is crucial when it comes to decision making.
In recent years, there has been increasing bridging between these new ideas and other well-established approaches based on typically first-principles derived models. Establishing solid connections between these two points of view has already proven to be fruitful.
About REM
The REM is a network of mathematical research institutes which aims at fostering the international presence of the Spanish research in mathematics, the creation of synergies among the mathematical scientific community and the socioeconomic impact of Spanish mathematical research. It promotes the dissemination and transfer of mathematical technology, orienting research towards the needs of companies, industries and public administrations.
