An introduction to differential modelling in biosciences

The course will give an introduction on the use of differential modeling in bioscience. We will discuss the use of ODE systems, PDEs, coupled ODE-PDE systems, as well as their numerical approximation. Some examples in cell modeling, epidemics, ecology and excitable media will be discussed.

PROGRAMME
1. Dynamical systems: the SIR model for epidemics
2. ODEs for lumped models: age-structured populations
3. PDE for spatially distributed models: dispersal of invasive species
4. Coupled PDE-ODE systems: numerical modelling of electrophysiology
5. Toy model vs. reality: applicability

PREREQUISITES
Familiarity with ordinary and partial differential equations. Some basics in numerical methods.
