SOUND, SHAPE, and HARMONY

The historical development of the mathematical understanding of musical harmony is the subject of the lecture. 

The analysis of stringed instruments lies at the root of the Western theory of music, while in Chinese music stone chimes have played a special role. A vibrating string is essentially one-dimensional, while the harmony of stone chimes depends on their two-dimensional geometries, whose analysis requires more sophisticated mathematics. 

More recently, the vibration of three- and even higher-dimensional objects have been investigated and embodied in some instruments.

El desarrollo histórico de la comprensión matemática de la armonía musical es el tema de la conferencia.

El análisis de los instrumentos de cuerda radica en la raíz de la teoría occidental de la música, mientras que en los carillones de piedra música chinos han desempeñado un papel especial. Una cuerda vibrante es esencialmente unidimensional, mientras que la armonía de campanas de piedra depende de sus geometrías bidimensionales, cuyo análisis requiere matemáticas máss sofisticadas.

Más recientemente, la vibración de los objetos de tres e incluso de dimensiones superiores ha sido investigada e incluida en algunos instrumentos.

He spent his whole career as a fellow of the CNRS-Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France. He held a Professor position at École Polytechnique,1986-2012, was President of the Société Mathématique de France,1990-92 and President of the European Mathematical Society from 1995 to 1998. He is a former member of the Board of the EuroScience organisation, 2002-2006, and served on ESOF-EuroScience Open Forum committees since 2004. He received the Prix Paul Langevin in 1987 and the Prix du Rayonnement Français in Mathematical Sciences and Physics from the Académie des Sciences de Paris in 1997. He is a foreign member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences and was elected honorary member of the London Mathematical Society, 2005. He has also been the Secretary of the mathematics section of the Academia Europaea. He was made Doctor Honoris Causa of Keio University, Japan, 2008 and of Nankai University, China,2011.

Ha sido durante toda su carrera, investigador del CNRS-Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Francia. Ocupó una posición profesor en la École Polytechnique,1986-2012, fue Presidente de la Société Mathématique de Francia,1990-92, y ha sido presidente de la Sociedad Matemática Europea 1995-1998. Es ex miembro de la Junta Directiva de la organización EuroScience, 2002-2006, y ha servido en los comités de ESOF-EuroScience Open Forum desde 2004. Recibió el Premio Paul Langevin en 1987 y el Prix du Rayonnement Français en Ciencias Matemáticas y Física de la Académie des Sciences de París en 1997. Es miembro extranjero de la Real Academia Española de Ciencias y fue elegido miembro honorario de la Sociedad Matemática de Londres, 2005, y ha sido el secretario de la sección de matemáticas de la Academia Europaea. Fue nombrado Doctor Honoris Causa de la Universidad de Keio, Japón, 2008, y de la Universidad de Nankai, China, 2011.

BCAM-Basque Center of Applied Mathematics, in collaboration with the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and DeustoTech - Faculty of Engineering, University of Deusto, are very honored to have Jean-Pierre BOURGUIGNON as the speaker of the public lecture M4TEMOZIOA Matematikaren Hitzordua I Cita con las Matemáticas 2015 and are very pleased to invite you to join this fourth edition of this cycle that will be held once every year with the aim of disseminate the importance and challenging future of contemporary Mathematics. This joint venture aims to underline the importance of Mathematics as such but also as a key of technological development and modern sustainable society.

Enrique ZUAZUA, Distinguished Ikerbasque Professor at BCAM coordinates this activity with Juan Ignacio PEREZ, Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and Pablo GARCÍA BRINGAS, Director of DeustoTech, Faculty of Engineering University of Deusto.


BCAM-Basque Center of Applied Mathematics, en colaboración con la Cátedra de Cultura Científica de la Universidad del País Vasco y DeustoTech, Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Deusto, se sienten honrados de contar con Jean-Pierre BOURGUIGNON como el orador de la chala pública M4TEMOZIOA Matematikaren Hitzordua I Cita con las Matemáticas 2015 y tienen el placer de invitarle ia unirse a esta cuarta edición de este ciclo que se celebra anualmente con el objetivo de difundir la importancia y futuro desafiante de la matemática contemporánea. Esta empresa conjunta tiene como objetivo subrayar la importancia de las matemáticas como tal, sino también como clave del desarrollo tecnológico y de la sociedad moderna y sostenible.
