The 5th BCAM-UPV/EHU Math Colloquium takes place in Leioa
- Bernd Sturmfels, director of the Max Plank Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (Germany), and Rafael Montenegro, director of the Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering (Canarias, Spain) were the invited speakers
The special program for the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics’ 10th anniversary included a Math Colloquium, organised in collaboration with the UPV/EHU, that took place on November 14th at the university’s campus located in Leioa. The invited speakers were two internationally renowned researchers that spoke on diverse fields of mathematics and its applications.
The first lecture was given by Bernd Sturmfels, professor of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley (USA) and director of the Max Plank Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (Germany). He spoke about the recent developments in computational algebraic geometry motivated by the study of rough paths in stochastic analysis in a talk entitled: "Varieties of Signature Tensors".
Rafael Montenegro, professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and director of the University Institute of Intelligent Systems and Numerical Applications in Engineering (SIANI), gave the second talk. It was entitled "The Meccano Method for Numerical Simulation" and it presented advances of this method for tetrahedral mesh generation and volumetric parameterization of solids which combines several former procedures: a mapping from the Meccano boundary to the solid surface, a 3-D local refinement algorithm and a simultaneous mesh untangling and smoothing.
In the next few months, BCAM will announce more activities of a disseminative and scientific nature that will be part of the celebration of the center’s 10th anniversary on its website and social media channels.
