Santiago Mazuelas, recipient of the 2018 IEEE ComSoc RCC Early Achievement Award

• The Ramón y Cajal Fellow at BCAM - Ikerbasque has been recognized “for contributions to theoretical and algorithmic research in radio localization” by the Radio Communications Committe of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is an association dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity. It’s the world's largest technical professional society, with more than 423,000 members involved in all aspects of the electrical, electronic, and computing fields and related areas of science and technology, in over 160 countries. The IEEE Communications Society’s Radio Communications Committee (RCC) is primarily interested in physical layer wireless communications. Its areas of interest include engineering aspects of communication and localization systems, equipment, and operation with involvement in standardization, spectrum, and regulatory efforts. The committee also assumes the proactive duty to nominate suitable candidates for Communications Society and IEEE awards, propose distinguished lecturer candidates, and endorse deserving candidates for the election to IEEE Senior Member and Fellow grade. To promote radio communications research and development activities in both the academic and industrial community, each year the association distinguishes one of its members with the RCC Early Achievement Award. The award recognizes members of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) who have achieved early career visibility in the field through research and service to the RCC. This year, Santiago Mazuelas is receiving the IEEE ComSoc RCC Early Achievement Award “for contributions to theoretical and algorithmic research in radio localization.”  

Santiago Mazuelas received his PhD in Mathematics and PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Valladolid (Spain) in 2009 and 2011, respectively. Since 2017 he has been a researcher at BCAM - Basque Center for Applied Mathematics where he’s part of the Data Science group. Specifically, he works at the Machine Learning research line. Before joining BCAM, he was a Staff Engineer at Qualcomm Corporate Research and Development, and he also worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Associate in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
