PI Day returns with BCAM-Naukas
On March 14 you can enjoy different activities at the Bizkaia Aretoa
The Basque Center for Applied Mathematics - BCAM and the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU are once again organizing BCAM-Naukas, which will take place on March 14 at the Bizkaia Aretoa of the UPV/EHU. In addition, there will also be an exhibition of mathematical photography Natural Geometry that can be visited between March 7 and 14.
The day will begin with mathematical workshops for primary and secondary school students, where mathematics will be approached in a playful and attractive way. In the afternoon, the celebration will continue with 15-minute scientific talks, dynamic and close that will be given in the Mitxelena room of Bizkaia Aretoa with the aim of bringing the fascinating nature of mathematics and to publicize, among others, the properties and applications of the number Pi in everyday life.
For its part, the exhibition is composed of 12 photographs of some members of the mathematical photography group Geometric approach. The aim of the exhibition is to discover that mathematics is present everywhere, even in nature.
This edition also counts with the participation of BCAM members for the talks and we can find María Ángeles García-Ferrero, Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Fellow and Nicolás Moreno, María-Curie Postdoctoral fellow. Below, you can find the program:
- 18:30 - 18:40: Presentation of the BCAM-NAUKAS event.
- 18:45 - 19:00: Pablo Rodríguez (Netherlands eScience Center): "With mathematics in the eyes".
- 19:00 - 19:15: Carmen Quinteiro (University of Vigo): "Sowing squares, harvesting trees".
- 19:15 - 19:30: Adolfo Quirós (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid): "The number pi and the wall of Carthage".
- 19:30 - 19:45: María Ángeles García-Ferrero (BCAM): "Mathematical images".
- 19:45 - 20:00: Nicolás Moreno (BCAM): "Tell me who you are and I will tell you how you move (A story based on viral facts, any resemblance to reality is pure science)".
- 20:00 - 20:15: Almudena M. Castro (Grupo MásMóvil, science communicator): "Bach's last puzzle".
Access to the BCAM-NAUKAS conferences is free of charge until full capacity is reached. Those who cannot attend in person, will have the possibility to follow live and via streaming all the conferences through the Kosmos channel of EiTB.

The workshops are free of charge and have a maximum capacity of 35 people. Only students from the same school will take part in each workshop. For this reason, in order to accommodate a larger number of schools, each school can take part in a maximum of two workshops. Pi Day
This international event was the brainchild of the American physicist Larry Shaw, who in 1988 launched the proposal to celebrate this date. The way March 14 is written in English and Basque coincides with the first three digits of the famous mathematical constant: 3-14 martxoaren 14 in Basque / 3-14 March, 14th in English. In recent years, the commemoration of Pi Day has become so widespread that on 26 November 2019 UNESCO proclaimed 14 March International Mathematics Day.
