In February, the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) has strengthened its commitment to scientific outreach aimed at students, highlighting the importance of inspiring new generations in the fields of mathematics and science.

February 7 marked the start of the 9th edition of "Women in Science" at BCAM, an event that underscores how every small action can make a difference on the path toward gender equality in science. During this event, students from IES Luis Briñas-Santutxu had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the innovative work of Leire Garmendia Bergés, Research Technician (Mathematical Design, Modelling and Simulations), as well as the experience of Mikel Pérez Arrieta, Research Technician (Computational and Applied Statistics). Together, they explored mathematical applications in an interactive and educational setting.

On February 13, Javier Sanguino (PhD Student, Machine Learning) visited El Molino Special Education Center to discuss biases in artificial intelligence algorithms and their real-world impact, as part of Tecnociencia (Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka). During his visit, Sanguino engaged with students from Special Vocational Training and the Specialization Course in Artificial Intelligence, who showcased their hands-on activities in the AI workshop and shared their preparations for entering the workforce. He also visited the occupational center, where data labeling activities are carried out, and explored other educational initiatives of the institution.

On the same day, Luca Fanelli (BCAM - UPV/EHU Researcher, Linear and Non-Linear Waves) visited IES Ibarrekolanda to explore the intersection between mathematics and music, unveiling how fundamental mathematical concepts intertwine with musical structure and composition. Fanelli captivated students with his dynamic talk, highlighting the underlying geometry in musical scores and presenting the 2M: Music and Mathematics project, which promises to further explore this fascinating connection.

Finally, on February 19, Nicolás Gorostidi (PhD Student, Mathematical Design, Modelling and Simulations) and Mikel Pérez Arrieta (Research Technician, Computational and Applied Statistics) shared their projects and daily experiences with students from Portugalete BHI, reinforcing BCAM's commitment to education and the inspiration of future scientists.

In addition, BCAM has participated in the series “Cinema and Science”, organized by the DIPC.

Ainhize Barrainkua and Daniela Moreno Chaparro, PhD students at BCAM gave a talk as part of the screening of the film ‘Le théorème de Marguerite’ (Anne Navion, 2024), and Ainhize and Daniela shared their experiences as PhD students and the challenges of this stage.
They visited Vitoria-Gasteiz (February 13), Donosti (February 14), Bilbao (February 16). And Pamplona (February 18).

These initiatives reflect BCAM's ongoing dedication to bringing science and mathematics into classrooms, inspiring and shaping the minds of tomorrow in the exciting world of scientific research.
