Wil Schilders, president of EU-MATHS-IN, will visit BCAM and give a seminar on mathematics for industry in Europe

• The impact of mathematical research in the industrial field will be the main focus of the Knowledge Transfer Seminar to be given by Schilders, on February 11, at the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics

The president of the EU-MATHS-IN, Will Schilders, will visit the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics - BCAM in February to offer a Knowledge Transfer Seminar about the importance of mathematics for industry, the initiatives carried out by the European Services Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation and to strengthen scientific collaboration with BCAM researchers. The event, which will be open to the public, will be held on February 11^th from 12:00 to 13:30.

Under the title "Mathematics for Industry in Europe", the seminar will highlight the importance of mathematics to face the new challenges posed by industry. Schilders argues that "mathematics provides a logically coherent framework to industry and a universal language for the analysis, simulation, optimization and control of industrial processes". Therefore, the use of mathematical techniques gives a competitive advantage to industry by suggesting innovative interdisciplinary approaches. With this in mind, EU-MATH-IN is working on new ways to encourage and stimulate collaboration between mathematics and industry, which will also be discussed during this event along with some success stories.

Industry is one of the main drivers of growth of the Basque economy, so this event will be the perfect opportunity for companies, innovation centers and other stakeholders in the field to strengthen ties and to get to know the importance of knowledge transfer in mathematics.  

About Wil Schilders

Wil Schilders studied mathematics at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, from 1974 to 1978 and obtained a PhD in numerical analysis from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1980. After that he started working in industry, namely at the renowned Philips Research Laboratories (1980-2006) and at NXP Semiconductors (2006-2010).

Since 1999 he has been a (part-time) professor of "scientific computing with industry" at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Since 2010 he combines his professorship with being the executive director of the Dutch Platform for Mathematics.  In addition, he was the president of ECMI in 2010-2011, and then the initiator and chair of the ECMI Research and Innovation Committee from 2012 to 2019.

In 2013, together with other scientific colleagues, he founded the European Services Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation - EU-MATHS-IN, of which he would later become president (2016). In 2019 he was elected officer at large of ICIAM, the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

About EU-MATHS-IN

The European Services Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation was founded in 2013. It aims to leverage the impact of mathematics on innovations in key technologies by enhanced communication and information exchange between the involved stakeholders on a European level. It shall become a dedicated one-stop shop to coordinate and facilitate the required exchanges in the field of application-driven mathematical research and its exploitation for innovations in industry, science and society. To this end, they have set up an electronic infrastructure providing tailored access to information and facilitating communication and exchange of sets of services specific to each actor.
