The SOMM Alliance Open Science Day takes place in Barcelona

• The incentives and recognition of open science have been discussed in an event organized by the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics – BCAM

BCAM and the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (DTIC-UPF) have organized the Open Science Day in the context of the Working Group on Open Science within the network of Severo Ochoa Centers and María de Maeztu Units (SOMMa). The event has taken place in Barcelona and has included several talks about how to make practical and effective changes to incorporate Open Science principles in the funding management process, the incentives and recognition of open science, and compliance in data management.

The day has begun with a workshop on Open Science and the funding management process run by the ORION H2020 project and a talk about the protocol for research data management at DTIC-UPF given by Malcolm Bain, a lawyer from idLaw Partners. Afterwards, members of FECYT, CRG and UPF have discussed how should Open Science be incentivised when assessing research organisations in programs such as the centers and units of excellence Severo Ochoa and María Maeztu. Finally, the meeting of the SOMMa Working Group on Open Science has taken place with the participation of Miguel Benítez, BCAM Project Manager.

7^th EiTIC Doctoral Workshop in Barcelona

On the previous week, several BCAM members also took part in the 7^th  EiTIC Doctoral Workshop in Barcelona, an annual meeting where PhD students can present their research outcomes to all members of the Department and the rest of the research community.

BCAM PhD students Amaia Abanda (Predoc Severo Ochoa 2016), Iker Beñaran (Predoc Severo Ochoa 2016), Tamara Dancheva (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017 ENABLE project), Sandeep Kumar (Predoc Severo Ochoa 2015) and Isabella Marinelli (Predoc Severo Ochoa 2015) took part in the event.

The day before the workshop Santiago Mazuelas (Ramón y Cajal and Ikerbasque Fellow at BCAM) gave a seminar entitled "Data processing under uncertainty and tractability limitations”. Jose Antonio Lozano, Scientific Director and leader of the Machine Learning research line at the center, also attended the workshop.
